Summary:
The paper introduces NE-Dreamer, a decoder-free model-based reinforcement learning (MBRL) agent that replaces pixel-level reconstruction with next-embedding prediction. Using a causal temporal transformer, the model predicts the next encoder embedding from history and aligns it using a redundancy-reduction metric (Barlow Twins). This approach enables the agent to learn temporally coherent latent states, leading to substantial performance gains in partially observable and memory-heavy environments like DMLab Rooms while matching state-of-the-art performance on the DeepMind Control Suite.
