Navigate SketchUp with a Mac Trackpad—No Mouse Required

A quick overview here on how I’ve set up my Apple trackpad to handle orbit and pan in SketchUp, leaving the mouse out entirely. This relies on the BetterTouchTool workaround, and you’ll need to create keyboard shortcuts from within SketchUp—mine are set to comma and Shift+P for orbit and pan.
Once that’s done, head over to BetterTouchTool. The pan gesture is already there, so I’ll run through how to set up orbit. Add a new action, pick the two-finger gesture, and select pinch in. Then click “Assign First Action to Selected Trigger,” choose “Send Keyboard Shortcut,” and put the comma key in.
Switching back to SketchUp, it’s now possible to orbit using a pinch—no mouse required. The pan gesture works with pinch out, and both controls are reliable. If you demo SketchUp a lot, this saves you lugging around a mouse with a scroll wheel. Worth mentioning: BetterTouchTool offers a lifetime license for around $24, and it’s adaptable to loads of other applications for shortcut mapping and gestures.
