The Monastery of Saint Florian is one of the oldest and largest monastic complexes in Austria, located near the city of Linz. Named after Saint Florian, whose relics rest in the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary within the monastery, it has long drawn pilgrims from across the country. Since 1071, the monastery—originally founded during the Carolingian era—has belonged to the Augustinian Order. The village of Sankt Florian grew up around the monastery walls.

The oldest structures in Sankt Florian are remnants of its ancient fortifications. After a Romanesque church on the site was destroyed by fire in 1235, a Gothic replacement was built, which itself was later transformed between 1683 and 1708 into the present Baroque masterpiece designed by Carlo Antonio Carlone. After Carlone’s death, construction was overseen by the renowned Austrian architect Jakob Prandtauer. The church’s frescoes were painted by Bartolomeo Altomonte.

In 1744, Johann Gotthard Hayberger began construction of the current monastery library, which today houses a collection of 150,000 volumes and medieval manuscripts. Among its treasures is the Florian Psalter, now preserved in Warsaw. The monastery’s art gallery is also widely known, particularly for its rare works by artists of the Danube School, including Albrecht Altdorfer.

The monastery is closely associated with the composer Anton Bruckner, who was born in the nearby town of Ansfelden. As a boy, he sang in the monastery choir and later served as parish organist from 1848 to 1854. Bruckner is buried in the monastery church, his sarcophagus placed beneath the grand organ. The composer Alfred Schnittke named his Symphony No. 2 “St. Florian” in Bruckner’s memory.

In Austria, the legacy of Anton Bruckner is deeply revered and commemorated in many places, especially in Upper Austria, where he was born and spent much of his life. In Vienna, he is honored with a star on the Walk of Fame outside the Philharmonic Hall.
