Dixieland, the initial stylo in jazz music, is based on fho collective improvisation by the members of the group. The trumpet, which slates tho leading malody, sings jauntily, the trombone ''grumbles" in the bass notes while the gay and virtuosic pattern of the clarinet is invariably present, in the musical texture of every work. But it is rhythm, precise and fascinating rhythm that prevails over all.
Dixieland is gaiety and laughter, dixieland is mild melancholy and artful irony. Listening to this music we seem to be spectators in a musical theatre, where the timbres of the instruments make up the cast and the scenery is provided by the dance rhythms of fhe early 20th century. The endless dialogue of the instruments draws us info the game and together with the players we rejoice at every new discovery in these collective arrangements, at every note happily, incorporated with the general musical ''conversation'*. Simple couplet forms, dance rhythms and song elements make this music easy to assimilate and dixieland continues to be one of fhe most popular musical forms in fhe world.
The "Leningrad Dixieland" was established in fhe late fifties. This group concertizes extensively since 1962. In 1966 it became prize-winner of fhe Leningrad Jazz Festival; in 1967 it was awarded prizes at two international festivals, in Tallinn and Prague. The group has given concerts in Warsaw, Budapest, Sofia and Berlin. Today "Leningrad Dixieland" ts fhe leading jaxz band of our country.
From the very first days of its existence this group sought its own style of performance. If would seem that jazz classic music has long asserted itself in the consciousness of people through fhe performance of such celebrities as Armstrong, Teagarden, Ellington and Beiderbecke and it was, therefore, no easy matter for the group fo assert its own new version of a blues, march or ragtime. Nevertheless, when played by this ensemble every work, every old melody takes on an inimitable timbre colour and all its interpretations are fresh and striking. The "Leningrad Dixieland" interprets domestic melodies very expressively and tactfully, with much invention.
In 1978 the group celebrated Its twentieth anniversary, but this impressive length of service has not taken away even a grain of youth and youthful spirit from it. Regular tours, the preparation of thematic programmes, performances at important European jazz festivals, radio and TV concerts — all this becomes possible not only due to the high professional qualities of its members, but also due to their special, fanatic devotion to music.
