The deep-sea diver character, named Flotsam Bob, is inspired by the pearl divers of
Broome. A century ago pearl shell was a valued commodity and Australia lead the
world in its supply.
My light-hearted interpretation is designed to capture the imaginations of young and
old. The head of my diver suggests a pearl and the body is carved from a composite
of reclaimed timbers and flotsam. The sculpture features an illuminated sphere to
represent the different cultures that sought their fortunes in the pearling industry
