GoPro captures QM1 rocket smoke ring before melting
On March 11, 2015 Orbital ATK fired the first Qualification Motor (QM1) for use in powering the SLS. This giant solid rocket motor burned over 1,500,000 pounds of propellant during its two-minute firing producing a peak thrust of 3,600,000 pounds. To capture the action this GoPro camera was placed only 25 feet from the nozzle. The radiant heat energy melted the housing and destroyed the camera but not before the GoPro was able to capture some amazing footage. At the moment of ignition the motor blew out the foam plug in the nozzle throat and created a giant smoke ring.
