Career Exploration for Students | 3 career tips for college and high students

In high school and college, I never took a career class. I decided on my major based on what I “liked” in high school. Not based on my ability to get a job.

Here are 3 career tips I wish I had as a student

- Your major should be focused on paper - I would tell my 17 year old self - “focus on business, that’s your major…but minor in environmental science” - I did the opposite and haven’t used my environmental science degree in 15 years

- Be a generalist - you “don’t know what you don’t know” as high school or college student. That’s why I recommend you get broad experience as a generalist - find what you are naturally good at and enjoy doing and THEN become a specialist so you can become world-class…operating in your superpowers

- Intern to confirm you have the right career path or major - as a college student, I did 4 internships with US Government agencies. After my last internship, it was clear I wouldn’t be able to build the career path I wanted in that sector so I pivoted to education and became a teacher. That internship experience was invaluable because I was able to “see” what it was like in the job
