Lightning - Spectra of a Negative Cloud-to-Ground Lightning Flash, 2010-07-12
Optical spectra of a negative leader is revealed using a diffraction grating and high-speed video camera. The leader moves downward prior to connecting to ground and forming a bright, hot return stroke. Specific wavelengths of atmospheric air species (namely oxygen and nitrogen) are shown.
