Similarities Between Arabic and Somali

Somali and Arabic are both Afro-Asiatic languages and share a lot of common words. In today’s episode, Ramla, a Somali speaker from Somalia, and Tamara, an Arabic speaker from Jordan, demonstrate some of the commonalities between the two languages.

Somali belongs to the Cushitic branch of the Afroasiatic languages and holds official status in Somalia.Meanwhile, Arabic is a Central Semitic language and the official language of Algeria, Bahrain, Comoros, Chad, Djibouti, Egypt, Eritrea, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco, Oman, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Somalia, Syria, Tanzania (Zanzibar), Tunisia, United Arab Emirates, and Yemen. Arabic is also the liturgical language of Islam.
