A Discussion with President Iván Duque on Granting Temporary Legal Protection to Venezuelan Migrants

Please join the CSIS Americas Program for a conversation with His Excellency Iván Duque, President of Colombia, to discuss Colombia's recent decision to grant temporary legal protection to Venezuelan migrants.

On February 8, 2021, Colombia announced the Estatuto de Protección Temporal para Migrantes Venezolanos – ETPV (Temporary Protection Statute for Venezuelan Migrants), which will allow eligible Venezuelan migrants to remain and work in Colombia legally for a limited period, offering them protection under Colombian law. This temporary protection statute will be valid for 10 years.

More than 5 million Venezuelans have left their country in the last few years to escape the country’s political, economic, and social crisis. Over 1.7 million Venezuelans have fled to Colombia and remained in the country, with almost 56% of these migrants being in an irregular situation.

This event will feature the President of Colombia, Iván Duque. Ambassador Mark Green, Executive Director of the McCain Institute for International Leadership, will provide opening remarks. The conversation will be moderated by CSIS Senior Vice President Daniel Runde. The discussion will center around Colombia’s decision to grant Temporary Protection Status to Venezuelan migrants, Temporary Protection Status eligibility requirements, and the social, economic, and political implications of the Temporary Protection Statute for Colombia.
