Inchtuthil Roman Legionary Fortress Scotland by Guy de la Bedoyere

A short film recording a visit to the Roman legionary fortress of Inchtuthil in Scotland, built for the XX Legion Valeria Victrix during the governorship and campaign of Gnaeus Julius Agricola in the early to mid AD 80s. The film includes one of the famous 1 million iron nails found during excavations in the 1950s and 60s sealed beneath the fortress workshop to prevent the Caledonian tribes using them. Little or nothing to see today but a location of huge importance. Inchtuthil is located at the end of a track opposite the junction of the A984 and B947 about 8 miles north of Perth. Follow the track south ill it curves when it reaches the Tay. Keep going west for about 250 metres till you reach some houses. The track leading up to the fortress is to the right of the houses. The coordinates of the centre of the fortress are: 56°32'28.06"N and 3°25'29.03"W. The fortress is oriented approximately 20 degrees east of the north-south axis. On Google Earth the south rampart and part of the east can be seen.

P.S. One of the strangest outcomes of the Inchtuthil excavation is that to this day you can find 'Crucifixion nails' being sold on the internet. Many of these come from the Inchtuthil pit of 1 million nails. They were made and buried about 50 years after the real date of the Crucifixion of Christ and at the opposite end of the Roman Empire.
