Blinds, shades, shutters and drapes are the four types of window coverings we offer at Blinds.com. What’s the difference? Let’s take a minute to learn the basics.

Custom blinds, feature vanes or slats that rotate to control the light, either horizontally or vertically making them a great choice for rooms with changing light. A hard window treatment, they can be made from wood, faux wood, which is a polymer or composite, metal, vinyl or fabric. When closed, blinds provide privacy; when open they stack at the top or side of the window. However, they do have a thick stack when completely open, meaning you may lose some of your view. If you’re concerned about your view, you might want to consider a fabric shade instead.

Shades differ from blinds in that they are made from a softer fabric or similar material, offering varying degrees of light control in your home. While they don’t have slats, shades come in fabrics with a range of opacity, allowing more or less light. Do you want a soft light to diffuse through the room, or would you prefer a blackout window treatment that block almost all sunlight? You can do both with window shades. Shades also sport a number of lift options and offer a full view when the window treatment is raised.

Shutters are the cream of the crop when it comes to window coverings. They enhance the aesthetics of any room, are available in a variety of louver sizes, colors, frame styles, and also add value to your home. A favorite with interior decorators, shutters are hard window treatments that are cordless, cover the entire frame and look great inside and out. Shutters can be made from wood or faux wood, just like regular blinds. If you want the look of shutters without the price, a large slat wood or faux wood blind would give you a similar appearance.
