The development of the centre in the late 1960s was part of a larger, simultaneous construction boom in the downtown area, which included housing such as the two large residential areas, Brf Farmen and Brf Volten, as well as the 17-storey "Höghuset i Täby" (later called Storstugan). This intense urban development resulted in nearly 3,000 apartments being completed within a 500-metre radius within a few years, alongside contemporary, large-scale projects in nearby Grindtorp and Näsbydal. Täby Centrum itself has undergone several significant transformations to maintain its relevance. An initial plan to double its size culminated in an expansion completed in 1991, which introduced a typical 80s mall aesthetic over three floors, contrasting with the older part's central square design.
Further ambitious expansion was planned in the early 2000s and partially completed in 2013, following a detailed plan adopted by the city council in 2009. This phase aimed to substantially increase the retail floor space by 26,000 m² for approximately 75 new shops, add 14,000 m² of office space, and nearly 870 apartments. Key infrastructure improvements were also part of the plan, including traffic solutions, a new underground visitor car park for approximately 3,000 spaces (replacing the outdoor lot), and the creation of a new central square connected to the library, church, and sports centre via a wide, tree-lined esplanade. This continuous process of modernisation and expansion has been set against the backdrop of increasing competition from other major shopping centre expansions in the Stockholm region, such as the development of the vast Mall of Scandinavia.
