Tall Fescue Overseeding

Hi, I’m Ley Pickens with Super-Sod. In one of our previous videos we looked at starting a new tall fescue lawn from scratch by seeding into a bare seedbed. Today we are going to look at overseeing an existing Fescue lawn. Tall Fescue is a cool season grass and thrives during the coolest parts of the year, typically early spring and even late fall. What most homeowners find, is that after the summer their Tall Fescue lawn has thinned out or may have some bare spots. Therefore we recommend overseeing your Tall Fescue lawn in the fall, typically during the months of September or early October.

The one thing you want to remember is you shouldn’t put out any preemergents prior to seeding. Preemergents are designed to stop weed seeds from germinating but they also prevent grass seed from germinating. If you are planning to overseed your fescue lawn in September or October, don’t put out any preemergents late in the summer prior to seeding.

Before planting any grass seed it is always a wise decision to take a soil sample of the area that you will be seeding into. This will help identify the pH level of the soil as well as if any other additional nutrients need to be added.
