The Lost Winter: VICE Sports Climate Change Special

Winters are getting shorter. Ski slopes around the world are opening later and closing earlier. Climate change isn't just making it more difficult to enjoy their favorite sports each winter, it's having a deep impact on the people and communities that rely on the winter sports industry year-round.

On average, a nationwide low-snowfall year results in an estimated 15.2 million fewer skier visits, $1.07 billion in lost potential revenue at ski resorts, nearly 13,000 fewer jobs, and $810 million less value added to the U.S. economy as compared to a nationwide high-snowfall year. This is the new reality. In this VICE Sports Climate Change special, we travelled around the country with snowboarder Lucas Debari and skier Maddie Bowman to investigate the effects of our lost winters.
