The Long Street - Road To Pandy Square

Vintage video from the BBC archives about the 1910 troubles surrounding the mining industry in the area around the town of Tonypandy, South Wales. Includes footage of my own great uncle WH Mainwaring at 15mins 45secs talking about the struggles and his part in them.

In more recent times some people have criticised the power of trade unions regarding their ability to inapropriately affect the lives of "everyday people". This video is a reminder about why trade unions were created and the role that they once played in the lives of those same people who now condemn them in the 21st century.

A prime-minister of the UK called Margaret Thatcher has recently died and it is my belief that many of the people who have praised her work in parliament have not fully appreciated the significance that trade unionism made upon the lives of the working classes of this country.

I know that some of you who will watch this video will have ancestors that knew all about what was happening back then. These are real people. I hope this video footage may remind some of us of what has gone before and place some of the recent events in April 2013 in perspective.
