Police and Communities – How to Build Trust | Kylon Middleton | TEDxCharleston
How can we improve relations between citizens and the police force? Educator and pastor Kylon Middleton uses lessons in injustice to facilitate difficult–yet collaborative–conversations to work toward mutual progress that unite communities.
Following the senseless murders of nine parishioners at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in 2015, local communities and law enforcement knew there needed to be a way to bridge the divide and help “illuminate” areas in need of better race relations. From there, and with the help of the National Law Enforcement Museum and Illumination Project, the Affinity Project was launched and is now led by Rev. Middleton.
A father to one son, Reverend Dr. Kylon Middleton is the Project Leader for the Charleston chapter of the Illumination Project and sits on the advisory council of the National Law Enforcement Museum. His work at Mount Zion African Methodist Episcopal Church and within the community is helping to improve Charleston by honoring and leveraging the diversity found here, for a better future for all. How can we improve relations between citizens and the police force? This educator uses lessons in injustice to facilitate difficult--yet collaborative--conversations with the community. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
