Ohara - Kyoto's quiet retreat
Ohara is known as the center of shomyo, an ancient Buddhist chanting style associated with the Tendai sect of Buddhism. Shomyo was brought to the area by the monk Ennin (794-864), who had studied the technique in China, although it originated in India.

Sanzenin Temple is the town's most famous site. The main street of the town leads directly to it, tucked away in the eastern mountains.

Surrounded by towering stone walls, Sanzenin is a large temple complex with many impressive buildings and beautiful gardens. The well-known monk Saicho (767-822), responsible for the founding of the Tendai sect of Buddhism, established the temple in the early Heian Period (794-1185).

Sakyō-ku (左京区, Sakyō-ku) is one of the eleven wards in the city of Kyoto, in Kyoto Prefecture, Japan.
The meaning of sakyō (左京) is "on the Emperor's left." When residing in the Kyoto Imperial Palace the emperor would sit facing south, thus the eastern direction would be to his left. Similarly, there is a ward to the west called Ukyō-ku (右京区), meaning "the ward on the Emperor's right." In old times, sakyō was referring to the eastern part of the capital, but the present Sakyō-ku is bounded to the west by the Kamo River and is thus outside the historical capital.

It was created in 1929 when it was split off from Kamigyō-ku.

Famous places located inside Sakyō-ku include Ginkaku-ji, Nanzen-ji, Kamo Shrine, Heian Shrine, and Hōnen-in.

In the northern parts are Kuramadera, Kifunejinja, Sanzen-in, the ruins of a house where Iwakura Tomomi was imprisoned, the Shugakuin Imperial Villa and Manshuin Temple, and the Kyoto International Conference Hall where the Kyoto Protocol was adopted.

In the northern mountains of Kyoto is the quaint village of Kibune, where you can find Kifune-jinja Shrine, many ryokan, and cedar forests.

Kifune-jinja Shrine is known for the incredibly photo-worthy stone steps that lead up to it, lined on either side with red lanterns. The shrine is dedicated to the god of water. According to legend, a goddess arrived in Kibune on a yellow boat, and the shrine marks the place where she finally landed.

Okunomiya, the location of the original shrine, is a kilometer away up the road. There you can see the large stone said to be covering the remains of the goddesses' yellow boat.

Those in the food industry often visit Kifune-jinja Shrine to pray for business success. The shrine features a very unique omikuji, or paper fortune. For 200 yen, you can purchase a blank piece of paper on which the fortune appears only when you float it on the water of the shrine's fountain.

The village of Kibune is also known for restaurants that feature kawadoko, or decks, over the rushing Kibune River below.

Kyoto is the capital city of Kyoto Prefecture in Japan. Located in the Kansai region on the island of Honshu, Kyoto forms a part of the Keihanshin metropolitan area along with Osaka and Kobe.

In 794, Kyoto (then known as Heian-kyō) was chosen as the new seat of Japan's imperial court. The original city was arranged in accordance with traditional Chinese feng shui following the model of the ancient Chinese capital of Chang'an. The Imperial Palace faced south, resulting in Ukyō (the right sector of the capital) being on the west while Sakyō (the left sector) is on the east. The streets in the modern-day wards of Nakagyō, Shimogyō, and Kamigyō-ku still follow a grid pattern.

The emperors of Japan ruled from Kyoto in the following eleven centuries until 1869, when the court relocated to Tokyo. The city was devastated during the Ōnin War in the 15th century and went into an extended period of decline, but gradually revived under the Tokugawa shogunate (1600–1868) and flourished as a major city in Japan. The modern municipality of Kyoto was established in 1889.
