Hurricane Delta has continued to rapidly intensify overnight and is now an upper-end category 2 hurricane with winds of 110mph, nearing major hurricane strength. This is a rate of intensification of 70mph in 24 hours from 8am on Monday to 8am today. this intensification is forecast to continue, and Delta is forecast to be a powerful category 4 hurricane before making landfall in the northeastern Yucatan peninsula tomorrow morning. A hurricane warning is in place around Cancun where landfall is expected, and preparations should be rushed to completion during the daylight hours today as conditions will rapidly deteriorate overnight. Expected impacts from Delta in the Yucatan will be life-threatening major hurricane sustained winds, additional rainfall of 4-6 inches, and storm surge.

After crossing the northeastern tip of the Yucatan, Delta will emerge over the Gulf of Mexico and is expected to reintensify from any weakening that it may ensue from land interaction, and is forecast to become a category 4 storm again in the Gulf. Some weakening is expected before Delta makes landfall along the Central Gulf Coast early on Saturday, but will still be a powerful storm at that time. Although it is still too early to pin down an exact US landfall spot, odds of landfall in Louisiana are increasing, and residents in Louisiana, Texas, Mississippi, and Alabama should make sure to have their hurricane plan ready and to begin preparations.
