NICKY BOMBA: THE 'FOOD & SHELTER' ALBUM INTERVIEW

Australian Musician editor Greg Phillips spoke to singer, songwriter, producer Nicky Bomba via zoom to chat about the making of his new solo album Food and Shelter, the gear he used, Bluesfest and much more.

On Friday October 22 singer, songwriter, producer Nicky Bomba releases his second solo album Food & Shelter. His first solo album was delivered back in 2009, however it’s the 24th recording of his career. When asked why so long between solo records, Nicky merely lists the ridiculous amount of other recording and performing projects he’s been involved with which basically just ate up his time. There’s his regular drumming spot in the John Butler trio, his successful Melbourne Ska Orchestra gig, and his other bands Banana Oil and Bustamento. Add to that his sessions with Joe Camilleri, the late great Ross Hannaford, and many more. The lockdowns finally delivered the studio time he needed to craft out an album for himself.

On his forthcoming new album Nicky explores ethnic folk music, 70’s funk workouts and even some quirky twangin’ surf sounds. Food & Shelter is an album about exploration, energy, and taking risks. Nicky plays all instruments and recorded and produced the full body of work whilst deep in lockdown, at his home studio. Food & Shelter is about simplifying and getting back to basics. Acknowledging the trappings of modern living and tapping into the essential seeds.
