Careful! His pen is loaded: Zapiro (aka Jonathan Shapiro) at TEDxWesterfordHighSchool
International cartoonist and political satirist, Zapiro (Jonathan Shapiro) talks about lightness and darkness in South African politics. In his heartfelt talk to the Westerford High School teenagers on what true leaders look like, he encourages them to be the leaders of tomorrow who bring light and not darkness to South Africa.
A political activist during South Africa's apartheid years Zapiro was detained by security police for a short time in 1988 before taking up a Fulbright Scholarship at the School of Visual Arts in New York. He has published numerous cartoon collections, as well as cartoons in various forms of print. He has been awarded many times for his work and was celebrated as one of the '100 World Class South Africans' by City Press.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
