Can you reach the underworld in your setting? #fantasy #worldbuilding #dnd #fantasyworld

In many ancient myths, the underworld (through its many names) has long been thought to be reachable through certain caves, tunnels or other features. From Pluto's cave in Turkey, to Beppu City, Japan, to even Pennsylvania in the USA.

I've often wondered how making the underworld easily, physically reachable (in theory) would affect a setting. Would there be guardians like cerberus to ensure spirits wouldn't escape into the land of the living? would they ever fail? how would the existence of ghosts and other creatures relate to these systems?

Its all rather fun to think about, let alone putting together specific locations and mechanisms in a setting.

How would your setting fare if they had a reachable entrance to the underworld? What would happen? Would your characters try to rescue a fallen comrade? Or would their worst enemy plot to return to the land of living?
