Here is how we treat compressed nerves as spine surgeons..
𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐬 is the process when the hole that the nerve runs through becomes narrowed. This hole is called the foramen. You have one at almost every level in your spine. This narrowing can be caused by bone spurs, disc herniations, enlarged ligament, tumor, etc. When this hole for the nerve has less space than normal, this compresses the nerve which can cause pain down the arm or leg.
In surgery, we target this hole by making more room for the nerve by either elevating the disc space with a cage/interbody spacer (indirect decompression) vs using special instruments to enlarge the hole by directly removing the bone spurs, herniations, etc. This is called a foraminotomy (direct decompression). Some patients need a combination of indirect and direct decompression.
