Comedian Harmonists - In einem kühlen Grunde [take 1]

HMV master OD 739-1, rec. Berlin, 7 January 1932
Ari Leschnikoff (1st tenor), Erich Collin (2nd tenor), Harry Frommermann (3rd tenor), Roman Cycowksi (baritone), Robert Biberti (bass), Erwin Bootz (piano)
The story of the Harmonists has been told many, many times, and I will not bore you by telling it again. But I hope you will be interested in this recording, for it has never been issued on LP or CD.
When the test pressing of this famous song was to be okayed by the singers, they rejected it for technical reasons and wanted to redo it. At this point, the record company had to admit in a letter (dated 28 January) that 1000 copies had already been pressed and shipped. This is one of them. The remake that finally made it on all the other discs, and that can be heard on countless reissues, is take five - easily identified by one of the rare wrong notes played by Erwin Bootz in the intro. I wonder if the Harmonists at that point wished they had not ordered the first master to be destroyed?
