How to test for abdominal separation and what helps my Physio SA Adelaide Womens Physiotherapist
Do you have a gap in your abdominal muscles during or after pregnancy? Abdominal separation or rectus abdominis diastasis is a thinning of the tissue called the linea alba that sits in the middle between the two sides of the rectus abdominis muscle (the "six pack" muscle).
In this video, Celia, a qualified Womens Health Physiotherapist shows how to self check if you have an abdominal separation and then gives a safe exercise to work on that will help you get started with strengthening your deep core muscles. Celia explains why abdominal separation can happen in pregnancy, and gives plenty of tips and advice on how to best manage it.
It is important you know more about abdominal separation prior to starting any exercising post pregnancy. Doing sit ups, crunches and planks etc is not recommended as these tend to put too much strain on the rectus muscles and hence on the separation.
