WHO KILLED WHO IN SCREAM | Mapping out the Opening Scene and the Killers Location Outside the House

If you ever wanted to know who killed Casey Becker between Billy and Stu, this video will give you a detailed behind the scenes look and commentary on not only which ghostface killer did the deed, but also show you their perspectives during Scream's infamous Drew Barrymore starring opener.

DISCLAIMER:
I edited this video in mind to have the animated simulation play along with the scene in question, which had all the movements and positions on the map line up perfectly with the events on film. Unfortunately, the video was flagged for copyright, so the only way I could post this was by removing the clip. I do think that having the video play simultaneously with the movie enhances the experience, so if you own a copy of Scream at home, I recommend playing it along side. The movie should begin (Dimension logo) at approximately 7 seconds into the animation. I've made the animation available on my Patreon, with the side-by-side scene comparison, and can be viewed by joining the "Freddy Krueger" tier for $5 (Link at the bottom of the description). But since I want everyone to be able to see the video, it is available for free on my instagram account, if you don't mind watching it in such a small format.

As a huge fan of the Scream franchise, I have always been fascinated by the first film's opening scene. It's no secret that Wes Craven was still very much replaceable as the director when they started shooting, and he wanted to prove his worth to the production so he decided to film the opening scene first (which typically is not usual for movies to shoot scenes in order). After the executives saw the initial dailies from that scene, they knew they had something special with Wes Craven.

A lesser director might have just shot this scene in a very straightforward, linear fashion, but Craven being the auteur he was, had laser precision attention to detail, and had so much more going on in that scene that was ever written or that we as an audience could ever comprehend. There was an entirely different set of actions taking place just outside of the house under the cover of darkness that didn't require any additional filming, but Craven was able to expertly paint a picture in our minds, and that is why this scene stands out as a paragon of his skill set, and the pinnacle of his career.

I would also be remiss to not mention Patrick Lussier's editing, who does an outstanding job on the first three Scream movies, but especially in this scene. He and Craven worked wonderfully together to produce 13 minutes of nearly flawless real time cinema.

I can't help as I watch this scene though, to always speculate on where the killers were outside of the house in relation to Casey Becker. She is essentially inside a fishbowl, with glass all around her, and we as the audience are on the inside with her, looking out. Of course I have my own theories, which you will discover in this video, but I was surprised to learn of how different every Scream fan's interpretation is of the events going on outside. Some people think only one of Billy Loomis or Stu Macher was there, while he tied Steve up to the chair and made the calls to Casey by himself. And there are some who think that only one killer is there, while the other is making the calls from a remote location. I of course believe they were both there, but the question still remains of who did what, and where were they?

Also, who was the killer behind the mask who killed Casey? Who killed Steve? And how did they get her body up in that tree so fast? There are definitely clues that Wes Craven left behind to help us with figuring out and breaking down the events and actions of the opening scene. So look closely, and see if you can spot them all.
