Why the Earth Has Seasons | Part 1, Earth Sun Moon System

Let's learn about how the Earth's orbit and rotational tilt causes seasons.

The earth’s rotational axis is tilted when compared to its orbit, and this means that different parts of the earth get different amounts of sunlight at any given time.

In December, the Northern Hemisphere is tilted away from the sun and gets less direct sunlight, which can make it chilly, and also means that it’s the Winter season. At the same time the Southern Hemisphere is tilted towards the sun, so it gets more direct sunlight, and experiences the summer season. The day on which the Southern Hemisphere gets the most sunlight of the year is called the Summer Solstice. The Northern Hemisphere gets the least amount of sunlight on this day, and people in the North call it the Winter Solstice.

6 months later, in June, the earth is at the opposite end of its orbit, and the Southern Hemisphere is now tilted away from the sun, making it winter in the South. The Northern Hemisphere is tilted towards the sun and experiencing summer. June also brings the summer solstice, the day with the most sunlight, to the North and the Winter Solstice, the day with the least sunlight, to the Southern hemisphere.

In March and September, both hemispheres get roughly the same amount of sunlight. One hemisphere experiences spring, while the other experiences autumn. The days on which each hemisphere gets exactly the same amount of sunlight are called Equinox. The Spring Equinox occurs in March in the North, and in September in the South. The Autumnal Equinox occurs in September in the North, and in March in the South.

When the earth completes its orbit, a new year begins, and the cycle of earth’s seasons continues over and over again.
