Fought between July 5 and August 23, 1943, the Battle of Kursk was the largest tank battle in history and marked a decisive turning point on the Eastern Front of World War II. After the crushing German defeat at Stalingrad, Hitler sought to regain the initiative by launching Operation Citadel, a massive assault on the Soviet-held Kursk salient, a 150-mile-wide bulge in the front lines.
