Gnosticism: why history repeats itself

Gnosticism was an ancient cult that merged greek myth, biblical stories, and platonic philosophy into a religion that did not reflect Christianity in the slightest. However, this gnostic cult influenced much of the early church. Had it not been for Irenaus work on "Against Heresies" we would know little of Gnosticism. Fortunately, Irenaeus' work would allow us to identify the recently discovered Nag Hammadi text as gnostic literature. Books such as the gospel of Thomas, the gospel of Judas, or the secret gospel of John would have never been identified as gnostic had it not been for Irenaeus.

Now that we know what gnosticism is, we find it shocking that we see proto (or early) gnosticism surounding us in mondern Chrisindom. In this episode we will discuss the gnostic myth, identify key theological distinctives such as dualism, antanomianism, and asseticism. Then we will conclude our episode talking about how we see these paterns in chrisindom today. Hope you enjoy.
