How He Earned a Soccer Scholarship (Worth $60,000) | Day 3

Aba is originally from Burma but he left the country some years ago because of issues with the army. “When they came into our village they treated us bad, stole our chickens, beat us up. It was not a democracy and back in the day we were just surviving.” Aba is from what’s called a CHIN state, a region in Burma. According to BBC News, "The Chin people... are one of the most persecuted minority groups in Burma."

Growing up in Burma, he played with no shoes. Playing in Europe was nothing but a distant dream. But when he moved to the US, his talents were quickly recognised and he ended up receiving a full-ride athletic scholarship to the University of Indianapolis.

His deep rooted motivations are clear: He wants to be the first CHIN professional player in the USA. Aba says many of his other friends in the CHIN community in the US do drugs and get into bad situations. He says he would never have thought of going to college but soccer saved him. “Because of soccer I went to college. Soccer saved me.”

He wants to be a role model to the CHIN community, so they can look up to him as someone who made it out of bad circumstances out of hard work and determination.

“I just want to play professionally even for a day or a week. I just want to prove them wrong. Anything is possible if you try hard, if you work hard.”

This will be his first time in Europe. He is most excited by the training and England as a place in general.

What he REALLY wants to find out from his time is if soccer is a feasible career path for him.

He wants to know how he compares to the players in England to help him answer that question.
