The Nadaswaram is a highly complex and ancient musical instrument, dating back to the 13th century in its present form.
Nadaswarams are very important in the cultures of many societies in the south of India, and are played widely in their weddings, temples and festivals. Making the Nadaswaram is a very skilled and sophisticated process; traditionalists execute it entirely by hand.
Narasinganpettai is home to some of the finest makers of the instrument, and families here have been with the art for several generations.
