Deerhoof ! Live in Denver ! COMPLETE CONCERT ! HD with Super 8
Another super live musical experience from Deerhoof. HANG IN THERE OR SKIP the first 20 seconds if you don't want the arty dark Super 8 film opening! September 25, 2013, Breakup Song tour, with tassles. Hi Dive in Denver, a smallclub with good sound and a friendly vibe.
I used 3 video cameras (2 plain jane consumer handhelds and a nicer Panasonic GH2) and a Bolex Super 8 film camera on a monopod. You'll know the Super 8 clips when you see them. They are as flawed and ghostly as I was hoped they would be.
I set up and ran all of the cameras myself when my helpers bailed, which felt hectic.
Especially when the Bolex, which is old and heavy, tipped over on the monopod and crashed near someone's foot. Thank God it missed. The music had not yet started. I had no idea if it was even working but I just kept shooting and reloading with a new film cartridge every song or so.
Not surprisingly, most of the Super 8 footage came out black, but I really enjoy the images that somehow were captured by the Bolex throughout the concert. Just enough to add a dash of exaggerated artifact from genuine analog film.
There were no stage lights on Greg so he's a bit in the shadows.
Audio: We did what we could with the real world limitations of DIY live recording. Sorry about a lack of more vocal presence on some songs, next time I'll try to get a direct PA feed to mix with the room, stage and PA speaker mikes. I am most happy with the drum sound and both guitars as well. The bass is pretty good if you have a sub. The vocals are pretty good on most songs. I think the overall drive is captured quite well.
I hope the beauty of this fine, fun performance and these marvelous rocking humans gets across. If it does, it is due largely to the talents of my editor and dear friend Henrik Boes, who squeezed everything he could out of the footage. And Brett Anderson, who labored under severe limitations to capture the sound in the room, to which I mixed in sound from a Zoom H4N near the drum kit and right PA speaker.
I have another concert from near the end of the tour (post tassles), in a small, dark club in Albany, NY. It has a mysterious feel with very problematic lighting but unique visual attributes I will try use to advantage. It was a hell of a performance. This was the night before the really great complete concert video in Philadelphia - not created by me, it is an excellent multi camera video, check it out if you haven't already - which took place in a well- lit, larger venue, so the contrast between bright Philadelphia and dark Albany performances will be interesting. I think I will use some AE visual effects on Albany, should be a creative learning experience.
I'm so glad this band is getting documented. Cheers!
