This Charity Plants Food and Hope! – Meals By Grace (P2)

Inspiring hope for those going through tough times is at the core of what “Meals By Grace” is doing for their community in Cummings, Georgia. In Part 1 of this story, we showed how volunteers for this non-profit met every Sunday to prepare meals for students and families in need so that they have nutritional food for their homes.

In Part 2, you will learn how their efforts go well beyond providing food. As the Meals by Grace volunteer force got larger, they developed programs to also help families get back on their feet after setbacks in health or employment. One effort created guided sessions in life and job skills to fill these gaps for families in difficult circumstances.

As these programs evolved, the organization looked for an emerging industry where the skills that were being taught could transition into real jobs. The solution was a nearby aquaponics farm that provided two solutions – jobs for local residents and a natural, chemical free environment to grow healthy food, year round.

“This is an agricultural system that only uses 10% of the water that traditional agriculture uses,” explained Stephen Daniels, Meals By Grace Co-Founder. “This is a total chemical free, organic setting. We actually use lady bugs to control pests that come into the greenhouse.”

The beauty of this system is that there is a continuous year round harvest that helps feed the hungry. Organization volunteers help with the planting, care and harvesting which helps those struggling in the community to get back on their feet and have hope for the future.

This innovative “farm” is only one of many programs that are in progress. Watch to see how another group of volunteers are using their professional skills to help families sleep better at night. There’s a surprise at the end that one family will never forget!
