Sorbate and Sulfite in Wine and Mead Making
Why we don't use Sorbate or Sulfite in Wine and Mead Making. Homebrew wine and mead can be really healthy! Making homemade wine, cider, mead and beer has some pretty amazing health benefits aside from the fact you did it yourself and you know everything you put into it. Then... we try to improve it, and add a little of this chemical or that additive. Before you know it, you've made something that might not be so healthy after all.
Natural brewing is healthy, and it's how wines and meads were made before there were commercial wineries and meaderies. People did this in their homes, simply and effectively. Some might say... well, how good could it have been? Think about it... if people didn't like it, they wouldn't have done it for 10,000 years! The "modern mead maker" is doing things to simply speed up production, not add to the flavors. I make my wines and meads to taste good, and I save money too, but if it didn't taste good, those few bucks I didn't spend wouldn't matter to me.
While some additives, such as organic nutrients and things of the sort are perfectly fine and don't cause any health issues, some activities and some practices might not be so healthful. I'm looking at you sulfites and sorbates! Even filtering your wine has drawbacks. Oh, and let's not forget... you want to let your brew finish fully before consuming it. For reasons!
