Gear: Tech21 FR5 and RK5 questions answered

I've seen lots of good reviews of the T21 FR5 and RK5 online, but I still wasn't sure about a few things:
do they sound the same other than the distortion sections?
do the Sans-Amp sections have enough grit to use them as a basic dirty amp sound or would I need to use the Plexi or OMG sections?
would you use the Sans-Amp section in front of a real amp?
how well do they work on-stage direct through a PA.
