The Physical Basis of Consciousness | Izi Stoll | TEDxCherryCreekWomen
NOTE FROM TED: This talk only represents the speaker's personal views and understanding of consciousness. TEDx events are independently organized by volunteers. The guidelines we give TEDx organizers are described in more detail here: http://storage.ted.com/tedx/manuals/tedx_content_guidelines.pdf
Dr Izi Stoll is a neuroscientist who has been studying the mind and the brain. Her most recent book, What We Are: The Physical Basis of Consciousness, provides a new theory for what thought really is. In the book and this talk, Dr Stoll argues that consciousness is something categorically different from neural activity, but still very much part of the physical world. She goes on to explain how mathematical and physical principles can uncover the very nature of perceptual experience and the self.
Izi Stoll began conducting neuroscience research in January 2001, while earning her undergraduate degrees in biology and psychology at the University of Illinois. She then completed a PhD in neurobiology and behavior at the University of Washington in Seattle. Shortly after moving to the United Kingdom, she started her own lab at Newcastle University, leading a team of talented researchers to develop new therapeutic avenues for treating neurological disease. After the Brexit referendum, Dr Stoll returned to the United States, where she currently directs a theoretical research program at the Western Institute for Advanced Study in Denver, Colorado.
Dr Stoll has received a number of awards for her research, including recognition from the American Federation for Aging Research and the Society for Neuro Oncology. Her new book, What We Are: The Physical Basis of Consciousness, is scheduled for publication in November 2019. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
