MY NOTES:
The Differences:
2.4GHz
- Long range
- Slower data speed
- Good at penetrating solid objects
- Best option for a partitioned room
5GHz
- short range
- Faster data speed
- Bad at partitioned area or with many rooms
- 5GHz is not the same as the Mobile Data 5G.
Wi-Fi VERSIONS: B/G/N/A/AC
B- WiFi 1. High rate wifi and can transmit up to 11Mbps
G- WiFi 3. Short distance but can transmit up to 54Mbps at around 60-125ft
N- Wi-Fi 4. This allows 2 frequencies using 2.4GHz and 5GHz
- Bandwidth up to around 150Mbps-300Mbps
- Supports multiple inputs and multiple outputs
- Range up to around 410-820ft (theoretically)
A- WiFi 2. is the early WiFi 5GHz and is very slow with bandwidth at around 3-54Mbps
AC- is WiFi 5. It is the main flagship of 5GHz WiFi
RANGE- is the measure on how far data can travel.
- The higher the frequency of a wireless signal, the shorter its range.
- That is why 5GHz is faster but can only reach shorter distances.
BANDWIDTH- refers to speed of the data being transferred from one device to another
- 5GHz is the best choice for bandwidth.
2.4GHz
- Average bandwidth of around 100-300Mbps
- Commercial routers which uses "N" has a realistic reach of around 20-100ft. depending on the obstacles
5GHz
- Average bandwidth of around 400-1Gbps
- Commercially and realistically, its around 500Mbps-1Gbps
- BUT theoretically, it should reach up to 1.7Gbps
- Range should be around 10-20ft.
- But theoretically, it could reach up to 820ft. "amplified"
Best Scenarios (SUBSCRIBE)
2.4GHz
- Best for normal browsing the internet and social media
- Non-demanding and non-real-time usage
- Use 2.4GHz in a partitioned places or if you are far away from the router
5GHz
- For video streaming
- best for gaming
- Mostly very demanding internet activities that require real-time response.
- Use 5GHz if you are in an open field and close to the router.
WI-Fi 6 or 802.11ax and the recently WiFi 6E
- The latest WiFi version
- Promises bandwidth up to 9.6Gbps theoretically.
- It is designed to cater to large number of connected devices within a network.
- But tests shows that it can only deliver slightly faster bandwidth than WiFi 5 or AC
- WiFi 6 also introduces WPA3 which improves security from WPA2
- WiFi 6 routers are currently expensive and only a few laptops and smartphones supports it.
- QSD 855 supports Wi-Fi 6 but not all smartphones with this chipset has it yet.
- WiFi 6 is for the future and majority of routers today still use 2.4GHz and 5GHZ with WiFi version N and AC.
- Netgear, ASUS, TP-Link, and D-Link
CHOOSING CHANNEL:
- Use WiFi channel that has less to zero users
- Use a WiFi Analyzer ( https://bit.ly/3kZKged ) to find out the least used channel
- Not all routers support changing channel, but if yours does, do this to get the best signal and bandwidth.
HIDE SSID:
- makes hacking more difficult
- Malakas sa battery
