SAFETY DISCLAIMER:
The following video is filmed in a controlled environment. All firearms are clear and safe. No live ammunition is present during filming. Safety is your responsibility when handling your firearms.

In Episode 3 we are talking about how your defensive gun should fit in your hand. First, we need to recognize and understand the difference between "fit" and "feel". How a gun FEELS in your hand is a physical comfort perspective, and although important, it should be considered after how the gun FITS.

To put it simply, the correct fit of a handgun will allow the user to reach all of the controls - slide release, trigger magazine release, safety/decocker, etc - with their primary hand alone. Although these controls vary in their level of importance during a defensive shooting situation, if we cannot utilize them with our primary (or secondary) hand alone, we need to find something more appropriately sized.

The reason we should look for a gun we can function with one hand is not only for the potential that, in a defensive encounter, our support hand could be injured or occupied (such as holding a loved one behind you for their protection) but also, it allows us to use the gun as efficiently as possible.

Think about it like this: we all use the brake pedal in our vehicles. We don't, however, use our right foot "this time", left foot the next, and occasionally use your hands as well. This is obviously an exaggerated example, but the moral is, using the most consistent means of completing a task efficiently, the better.

On a final note, we must understand the compromises of having a "shared" gun. If, for whatever reason (ie: husband/wife for home defense) we will be sharing our defensive handgun as opposed to having one solely for ourselves, there will most likely need to be trade-offs with some of these features. Although there is not much we can do about completely erasing these needs for compromise, we should still approach buying a "shared" defensive gun as closely to the guidelines in this video as possible.
