"Rumania" a funny and frivolous song plays with all the cliches about Rumanian Jews in the old Eastern Europe at the beginning of the 20th century, of how much they loved to drink wine, eat, and celebrate all night long.
The song-lyrics are not shying away from offensive jokes about adultery, fat women or old women, or from advising daughters to do the same thing as their mother did, once. But besides that it is - as we witness it on this video and actually at each of our concerts - one of the most dance-able and rocky tunes that ever evolved from the Klezmer world.

Flooded by millions of Yiddish speaking immigrants, "Rumania" was a constant hit in the USA of the first half of the 20th century. The song was written by Aaron Lebedeff, one of the most charismatic Yiddish singers of the roaring 20's, who was kind of a Yiddish Maurice Chevalier of those times. It was interpreted, among others, by the two legendary Yiddish female bands the Andrew Sisters and the Barry Sisters. Lebedeff´s unforgettable wonderful six minutes of "Rumania", https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vuj-q... a jamming stroke of genius Yiddish rap and masterfully playfully improvised arsenal of non-verbal sounds with his tongue served us as the raw-model for our interpretation.

The Jewish Monkeys are masters of identity play, knights of the absurd, musicians and comedians, who deliver an exhilarating show. They love breaking ethnic and religious taboos, combined with liberating salvos of satire. Their neo-Yiddish sound fusion swings between cirque-like chanson and energetically punk-driven pop, while the language alternates between English and Yiddish. They rarely fail to get people on their feet, dancing: from Syrian refugees in a Dresden transit camp to anti-Pegida protesters the next day. Or from culturally savvy music lovers in German, Czech or French clubs and concert halls, as well as to to hipsters in London or Tel Aviv. And now they’re touring with their latest album.
