Dustin Hoffman found out about his Ukrainian roots not so long ago. In 2016, a professor of Harvard University Henry Louis Gates presented archival documents in the Find Your Roots program, which indicated that Hoffman’s paternal grandfather and grandmother emigrated to the United States from Bila Tserkva in the early twentieth century.
When civil war broke out in the post-revolutionary Russia, Dustin's grandfather Frank returned to save his parents from the anti-Jewish pogroms. He wasn’t able get to America anymore. Grandfather Frank and great-grandfather Samuel were executed by shooting by the Cheka secret police, and great-grandmother Liba was sentenced to forced labor camps, where she spent 5 years.
Hoffman’s father had been hiding his grandfather’s story from his son all his life, but he found out now that his grandmother even sued the USSR and demanded $151,500 for the murder of her husband.
Today, Dustin Hoffman is one of the most successful actors with two Oscars and seven nominations. He is called the greatest perfectionist among the Hollywood actors. Having learned the story of his family, he said, “They all died for me being here.” - wrote Boris Lozhkin on Facebook.
