Should You Coyote Swap

Should You Coyote SwapShould You Coyote Swap

Episode 439

Autorestomod
We had a viewer write in and say “just drop a Coyote in it”. And that sparked this video. To do a Coyote is not cheap in a classic Ford. We’re going to look at the swap.

The Good:
Instant 430 horsepower without mods.

Parts are available to shove on into your favorite classic body.

The Bad
You have to modify most but not all of the popular Ford chassis for the engine to fit.
If they don’t offer a notching kit or it isn’t a Mustang II on most midsize Fords...it won’t fit.

There is the Mustang II suspension. Rod and Custom Motorsports offers a kit for the swap.

If you want to stay a bit more traditional RRS-USA offers a full line of parts to shove that Coyote in your car.

The Ugly
$4000.00 Suspension
$7000.00 Engine, accessories, and harness
$4000.00 Driveline
$15000.00

I’m gonna do it!
Best engine: The Gen II was available in the Mustang and F150 from 2015-2017. It has all the forged aluminum engine internal goodies from the 2012-2013 Boss 302. Making it good for power adders like turbos and superchargers.

Good is the Gen I Still a 400 plus horsepower powerhouse, but without the forged internals of the Gen II. Will not take superchargers as well.

This gets expensive.

We talked to our friend Frank Perdomo at PBH Performance and got the skinny on costs They sell new Gen II crate engines, harnesses and accessory drive kits that you’ll need.

Engine: Gen II 5.0
$7999.99
USED: $3,000-$8,000 for a run pallet engine
Harness Kit
$1800.00
(includes drive by wire pedal, harness, PCM, Radiator hoses, Air box (you won’t use it) and PCV hose)
Accessory drive kit
$449-$879

Front sump oil pan (if not using a Mustang II front suspension) RRS-USA.com
$595.00

Headers
Variable. RRS has them to clear rear mounted steering for $1070 for 1 ¾ ID mandrel bent tubes. Stang Aholics has a mid-length stainless header for $1195.00

You’ll need an electric fan The Coyote likes to run between 197 and 220 degrees farenhite.
$100.00
Fuel system
You will need a good return system (the original is a returnless) that can hold the 58 GPH that the Coyote needs.

Aeromotive carries one that can work quite nicely as a retrofit. The Phantom 340 Stealth fuel system. This will support a non forced induction application. More air more money.
$507.00

Transmission:
Variable. You can put anything from a Modern Driveline T5 or TKX to a Lentech 4R70W.
Can you do cheap? Yes. You can use the stock transmission either auto or manual but those suckers are pretty big and may (will) require tunnel mods

$3695.00 for a Lentech Automatic

$5000-$6000 for a Five speed with all new components from Modern Driveline including driveshaft, hydraulic clutch, bell housing clutch and pressure plate and transmission.
$17,000.00

It’s up to you. If it were about money, the hobby would be long dead. Golf is not about money, neither is modifying your car.
