'What is Coercive Control?' looks to the 2015 U.K. legislation to answer the question about this hidden, invisible form of violence that is the Narcissist's weapon of choice. It is a subtle kind of psychological abuse that slowly chips away at the target's identity, shattering their self-confidence and making them compliant with the Narcissist's will.

Before Dr. Evan Stark coined the term Coercive Control, the method had been studied by numerous scholars including Dr. Mary Romero, Dr. Albert J. Biederman, and Dr. Robert J. Lifton among many others. It was the basis of the national policy of Chinese Communists who called it 'Thought Reform' (Szu Hsiang Kai Tsao, see Ai Ssu-ch'i). It is also known as identity modification.

Coercive control is a common tactic among the subgroup of Covert Narcissists. They use coercive and controlling behaviors to manipulate their targets. Narcissists use Coercive Control to change who you are. The impact can be so psychologically devastating that Dr. Lifton described it as performing "surgery on the soul". Due to the high levels of stress brought on by Coercive Control it can lead to chronic anxiety, depression, PTSD and C-PTSD in some survivors.
