The WWII Ship That Lost Its Bow and Returned to Battle
The WWII Ship That Lost Its Bow and Returned to Battle
A Japanese torpedo destroyed the front of USS New Orleans (CA-32) during the Battle of Tassafaronga in 1942. Most ships would have been lost forever—but the crew refused to give up.
After losing nearly the entire bow, the sailors created an unbelievable temporary repair using coconut logs and sailed the damaged cruiser across the Pacific to Australia.
At the shipyard in Sydney, engineers rebuilt USS New Orleans, giving the wounded cruiser a new bow and a second chance. Months later, she returned to the Pacific War and fought in major battles until the end of World War II.
This is the incredible true story of a warship that survived impossible damage and became one of the greatest examples of WWII naval resilience and American damage control.
