Battleship North Carolina The Head(Bathroom) Tour

Battleship North Carolina was the first American battleship to be built in 16 years. The North Carolina was one of the ten fastest battleships in the American fleet in World War II.

Commissioned on April 9th, 1941, North Carolina participated in every major navel offensive in the Pacific during World War II., earning 15 battle stars. She established the role of battleshis as protectors of aircraft carriers when she defended carrier Enterprise against air attacks during the Battle of the Eastern Solomons on August 24, 1942.

North Carolina carried out 9 shore bombardments, sank an enemy troopship, destroyed at least 24 enemy aircraft and assisted in shooting down many more. Her anti-aircraft guns helped halt or frustrate scores of attacks on aircraft carriers. One of her Kingfisher pilots performed heroically during the strike on Truk when he rescued ten downed Navy aviators on April 30, 1944. She steamed over 300,000 miles.

Although Japanese radio announcements claimed six times tat North Carolina had been sunk, she survived many close calls and near misses and one hit when a Japanese torpedo slammed into the Battleship's hull on September 15, 1942.

By the end of World War II, she only lost 10 men in action and had 67 wounded.

After the war, the ship served as a training vessel for midshipmen.

She was decommissioned on June 27, 1947 and placed in the Inactive Reserve Fleet in Bayonne, NJ.

The Navy announced its intentions to scrap the North Carolina in 1960. The citizens mounted a brief but successful campaign to bring the Battleship to North Carolina to preserve her as the State's premier war memorial and tourist destination. The ship opened to the public in October 1961.

North Carolina is an authentically restored World War II Battleship, a National Historic Landmark, and a memorial honoring the 10,000 North Carolinians of all branches of service who gave their lives in World War II.
