To save misinterpretation, i want to make it clear that i do not intend to soften Mary's actions during her reign. I just wanted to show where she might have been emboldened to act against the protestants of her time. Mary was not the first monarch to act against the 'heretics' in a perverse way, let's see the examples in her life, her Castilian grandparents, her father and brother, made it clear to her what was needed to become a strong queen. Perhaps she accepted the fact that despite being the eldest daughter, she would not become queen because of her sex, but the schemes for her cousin Jane's coronation as queen showed that her rivals didn't care too much about it. I believe that from that moment on she understood that they would never accept her as a Catholic queen in a converted England. A transient England where she witnessed the persecution of many she considered friends and allies. Elizabeth was a great queen, i agree, but it is unfair to know that to popular thinking, Elizabeth punished rebels, not enemies of the english church, was reluctant to execute Mary Stuart, was a reflection of justice for the death of her innocent mother and did not give up the faith attributed to her. Well, Mary wasn't exactly the opposite, she also felt threatened by her own family, after reluctance executed Jane, she saw herself in the image and likeness of her mother's wishes, and clung to catholicism as she had been teatched since a little girl. Killing more or less makes no difference in such a bloody period for an entire continent. Mary was no more bloodthirsty than those who are now revered and remembered for their good deeds, while all that is evil is swept under the rug.
