C1930-1997 HMS Tamar Royal Navy Maritime Ship's Wall Plaque (Davey's Antique Arms)

(Item No. #0000051)
"The HMS Tamar was reportedly a British troopship that was laid down in 1862 and launched in the following year. She was stationed on a permanent basis in the harbour of Victoria City, Hong Kong, from 1897 up until 1941. During the Second World War's Battle of Hong Kong, she was scuttled to avoid her capture by the invading Japanese Imperial forces. Another ship of the same name remains in active service today under the Royal Navy, built by BAE Systems Naval Ships (laid down Dec 2016, launched Oct 2018). It bears the same badge as the one on this ornamental wall plaque. This HMS Tamar serves as a patrol ship, with its recent expeditions ranging between its conducted fisheries protection in February/March of 2023 and the more recent recovery of the HMNZS Manawanui's navigation record book. HMS Tamar was also the name given to the British Royal Navy's base in Hong Kong from 1897 up until 1997. It adopted this name from the first of the two aforementioned ships above, that of which was used as a base until it was replaced by buildings ashore. This image shows a vintage-style wooden plaque featuring the official crest of HMS Tamar. The crest is designed in a traditional diamond shape topped with a naval crown. It prominently features the name "TAMAR" and the Latin motto "Tam Marte Tam Pace". Online records state that this loosely translates to "So Mars So Peace" or "Thus Mars is peace", though the real meaning behind this motto is meant to tie into the bordering river (also named the River Tamar) between the counties of Devon and Cornwall, a reference to the combined arms of the two counties (both located in the United Kingdom). The badge on this plaque was approved in 1930. Plaques like these are suited for ornamental use as souvenirs, often collected as a piece of naval memorabilia."
