Behind the Scenes: 2018 West Regional, Day 2
📼 July 20th, 2018 | For the first time, the 2018 West Regional hosted athletes from the Canada West and West Coast regions, creating a very tight competition at the Del Mar Fairgrounds in Del Mar, California.
Saturday has traditionally been dubbed “moving day” at Regionals in reference to the major shifts that typically occur on the leaderboard. At the start of Day 2, Canada West athletes Emily Abbott and Jonathan Gibson sit in first place overall. But commentator Bill Grundler is not convinced that means much.
“It’s always hard to look at the Leaderboard after Day 1,” Grundler says. “I don’t think it’s a very true reading yet.”
2017 California Regional victor Chyna Cho sits in ninth, outside a qualifying spot after Day 1. Cho says only one word is in her head before she heads to the competiton floor: “execute.”
On the men’s side, Brent Fikowski sits one spot out of qualification in sixth, but The Professor has a lesson plan: “You just go right towards the pain.”
Event 3 presents a skill challenge with muscle-ups, handstand walking and pistols, while Event 4’s snatches and burpees will create a race to the finish.
Who will take the top spot heading into the final day of the West Regional?
More importantly, who will finish sixth and ultimately earn a Games spot when Abbott fails a drug test after the competition?
