Ceremony of the Keys
For the first time in over half a century, Reserve soldiers have taken on the duties of Tower Guard. 3rd Battalion The Royal Welsh adopted the unique role from May 30 through to June 5 and included forming sentry to the Jewel House, where the Crown Jewels are kept, and the Queen’s House.
The soldiers were also responsible for the daily march to the Byward Tower to collect the Passing of the Word and take part in the Ceremony of the Keys – a tradition that has taken place every night without fail for more than seven centuries.
