LibreOffice Base Split Database Example
LibreOffice Base is a database management system that acts as a front end to the HSQLDB database engine.

Within OpenOffice or LibreOffice split databases are much more reliable than the normal compressed variant of the database file.

Normally the database .odb file has the hsqldb compressed inside it and base automatically uncompresses the database to a temporary folder when it is being used and then recompresses the file on close.

When you split the database it is still portable, and you can transfer it by copying the enclosing folder to other locations such as a USB stick or another drive and rename the odb file to create a copy of the database or a new one.

The only disadvantage of the split database solution is that you will need to use SQL if you need to modify the structure of existing tables.

You can use the base table designer to create your initial databases tables but to make modifications you need to use SQL.

LibreOffice base as a front end to the hsqldb database engine is far from being a second rate alternative to access.
In many ways, it is more powerful and can handle much more data.
