Kookaburra feeds the babies

Further footage of the local kookaburra who now have babies - new footage of close-ups.

The parent Kookaburra have been feed at this location for about 12 months. The Kookaburra tend to come and go, though they do seem to be in the adjacent bush area throughout the year. They are mainly fed shredded steak. They stay in the area after being feed to catch their own prey; insects, lizards, frogs, witchetty grubs and worms.

Both of the parents have come to be feed, normally twice a day. The male is the most likely to come and when with the female will usually insist on feeding her rather than letting her be feed directly. The female is not in any of these pictures, only the male and the 2 chicks.

The current 2 babies are most likely the first for these parents as there are no other Kookaburra in the group.

Kookaburra live in family groups consisting of a breeding pair and several auxiliary relatives. The group structure is maintained by calling and aggressive behaviour. When roosting, they perch together on the same branch, usually in a row that reflects the order of dominance within the group. They generally establish and then remain within a territory. Breeding occurs between September-January. 2-4 eggs are laid inside a tree hollow, where the breeding female and auxiliary relatives share the task of incubation and infant care.
